Food picks: Hediard in Tanglin Road

Each time I go to Hediard at Tudor Court, I find myself being transported to France. The small boutique and cafe, which is celebrating its 10th year in Singapore, is cosy with a touch of sass. But don't worry, it is not pretentious and the pricing is surprisingly reasonable.

Its $19 Breakfast Set includes coffee, tea or hot chocolate; a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice; a choice of one viennoiserie - a croissant, brioche or pain au chocolat; a soft-boiled, hard-boiled or fried egg with toast; and a small jar of jam and marmalade or honey.

The warm, lush brioche is a joy to eat, as is the buttery croissant.

Other items available for breakfast include scrambled eggs ($13) and Eggs Benedict ($16).

All-day items include the Croq' Ferdinand ($16), a rilled sandwich with Parma Ham, gruyere cheese and mornay sauce; the Croq' Germaine ($18), a Croq' Ferdinand topped with a sunny-side-up egg; and the Croq' Ferdinand with black truffles ($26).

Have a macaron after your meal or pop into the deli next door for items that range from gourmet teas and preserves to fancy vinegars and caviar.
