Neighbours warm ties with curry at National Day parties

The Singapore Kindness Movement helped residents to organise the makan sessions to encourage neighbours to bond over food, said its general secretary William Wan. The street parties were held in two Siglap and Mountbatten housing estates.

Tanjong Rhu residents celebrate National Day with a 'Big Makan'
9th August is usually remembered as National Day but for the over-600 residents of a Tanjong Rhu estate, it was a day made more memorable when they came together for a 'big makan'.
The inaugural Big Makan was organised not only to celebrate Singapore's 48th birthday, but also to strengthen neighbourly bonds and inspire the Tanjong Rhu community to revive the Kampung spirit.
As per its name, there was a sumptuous feast on offer that night as residents tucked into food ranging from local favourites like curry to European delights like chocolate fondue and desert pastries while watching a live screening of the National Day Parade.
The first-ever Big Makan came about as a spin-off from a community street party first launched in 2000, and is supported by The Singapore Kindness Movement.
