Parents not fazed by milk recall

SINGAPORE - Parents here are not overly alarmed by Danone Dumex's recent recall of two batches of one of its milk-powder products, following Fonterra's warning about its ingredients in some products being contaminated.

Mrs W. L. Cheong, 26, told My Paper that her son of nine months, who has been drinking the affected milk formula - which is intended for toddlers older than six months - is active and has a good appetite.

"He shows no signs of the symptoms which the bacterium is said to cause, like diarrhoea, gastric problems, vomiting and muscle weakness," the housewife said.

On Sunday, Danone Dumex said it was recalling two batches of its Mamil Gold PreciNutri Step 2 After 6 Months Followup Formula in Singapore, as a precautionary measure.

The company noted that "none of the products tested and sold in Singapore indicate any contamination".

However, information from Fonterra suggested that some products packed in Malaysia may be contaminated, it added.

Another parent, who wanted to be known only as Mrs Lee, said she took her toddler, who turns one in a few days, to the paediatrician on Monday after hearing about the recall.

Although she was initially anxious, the bank executive, 31, said she was reassured by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore's announcement that infant milk products here had been tested, and that there was no importation of contaminated Fonterra products.

Dumex has set up a refund and exchange centre at Sheraton Tower Singapore, open till Sunday, to facilitate return of the recalled products.
