Footballer killed after team loses match

Cameroonian football player Albert Ebosse died Saturday after he was hit by a projectile thrown from the stands following his team's loss in the Algerian football championship, APS news agency reported.

Ebosse, 24, was rushed to a hospital at Tizi Ouzou, east of the capital Algiers, where the match took place.

He had scored the lone goal for JS Kabylie in the home match. They were defeated 2-1 by USM Alger.

Fans started throwing objects from the stands as the players were returning to their changing room.

The Algerian interior ministry ordered an investigation.

Mr Issa Hayatou, president of the Confederation of African Football, expressed his condolences and cautioned that "African football cannot be the breeding ground for hooliganism whatsoever".
