Former SSC CEO Oon set to join Sports Hub

Former Singapore Sports Council (SSC) chief Oon Jin Teik is set to join the Singapore Sports Hub as its chief operating officer.

This, after home-grown water management and environmental solutions firm Hyflux announced on Wednesday that he will be stepping down as group executive vice-president, global marketing and South-east Asia, with effect from April 30.

According to Hyflux's statement, the former national swimmer "will be taking up a senior role to lead an initiative of national interest as well as a pursuit that is close to his personal interests and passion".

The Straits Times understands that Oon will join the Sports Hub - set to open its doors next month - as its chief operating officer.

The $1.33 billion project was one of the the major milestones reached under Oon's six-year-long tenure as SSC chief. He was succeeded by former national water polo vice-captain Lim Teck Yin.

His spell in charge, which ended in December 2010, also included the Republic's hosting of the inaugural editions of both the Youth Olympic Games (2010) and Asian Youth Games (2009).

He also oversaw the 2010 introduction of a multi-year funding model, which allowed well-run national sports associations to plan better for the long term.

Now 50, Oon represented Singapore at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and returned from the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul with two bronze medals.
