Free durians in Kedah

ALOR SETAR - Durian lovers here will be going gaga over a free durian feast tomorrow, which also takes into account those who are fasting in Ramadan.

Orchard owner Lee Shiong Lian, 55, said he was only doing his part in promoting the fruit and spreading goodwill all round in this giveaway touted as the "first ever in Kedah".

"I have about 200 durian trees, as well as rambutan, mangosteen and other fruits in my orchard in Kubang Pasu.

"The durians in my orchard are Musang King, Ang Heh (Red Prawn), Tangkai Panjang, D2, D24, D92, D99, D604 and many more," he said during a press conference yesterday.

Lee will be making available some 1,000 durians from 11am to 4pm at the Rest City Restaurant near the Putra Medical Centre in Jalan Sekerat.

He claimed that no one has ever organised such an event in Kedah.

"It is on a first-come, first-served basis.

"Since it is Ramadan, Muslims can take away a box of the fruits while non-Muslims will have to eat them on the spot.

"My friends will help open the durians for my guests," Lee said.

He added that the price of his durians ranged from RM5 (S$1.76) to RM20 per kg.

"The Musang King is selling at RM20 per kg, Ang Heh at RM10, D2 at RM10, and the rest between RM5 to RM6 per kg.

"I do not have any commercial agenda.

"I just feel happy to share my durians with the public and my friends," he said.
