Free food at Fort Canning

What better way to celebrate Singapore's Golden Jubilee than to indulge in a national pastime? And to do it without forking out a cent? Yes, eat for free.

To celebrate its third anniversary as well as SG50 next month, Hotel Fort Canning will hold a two-day Makan In The Park Food Fair. It will be giving out 10,000 "makan passports" to members of the public who register on its website by July 31.

"Passport-holders", who have to agree to receive future promotional announcements from the hotel, can attend the event on Aug 22 or 23 during their requested time slot.

They will enjoy free food samples prepared by the hotel's chefs such as laksa and satay. They can also take part in cooking demonstrations and workshops conducted by its partners, including bento- making with blogger Shirley Wong of Little Miss Bento, food photography with Fujifilm and photo grapher Ivan Joshua Loh, and whiskey tasting with Johnnie Walker.

Other activities include outdoor screenings of food-themed films Ratatouille (2007) and Chef (2014) and a cooking challenge - those who submit a request to take part by July 31 stand a chance to win a pair of National Day Parade tickets.

There will also be a market featuring local food products, with offerings such as ice pops from Popaganda as well as bagels from TwoMen Bagel House, which has launched a special chicken satay bagel to celebrate SG50.

The hotel event was inspired by Singaporeans' love of food.

Ms Vivien Ong, sales and marketing director of Eng Wah Global, which owns the hotel, says: "This is the first time the hotel is holding an event of this scale. Hopefully, attendees will have a blast."

Student Zheng Yirong, 20, who is studying law in London, will attend. She says: "I've been deprived of local food for too long. I don't mind going since the location is so central and I'd love to join the food demonstration workshops. After all, which Singaporean can pass up free food?"
