The Western Digital Red series of Sata is designed specifically for home and small office network-attached storage (NAS) systems with up to five drive bays.

These hard drives are tested to be compatible with the world's top NAS system manufacturers, such as QNAP and Synology, and optimised for performance and reduced power consumption.

For the first time, Western Digital is rolling out the Red hard drives in 2.5-inch form with capacities of 750GB and 1TB. This is for small NAS systems that are becoming more popular with home-users. There is also a new 3.5-inch 4TB Red hard drive.
