Haze across Brunei recedes considerably

BRUNEI - The haze that had enveloped Brunei for the last few days has largely lifted, with much of the country returning to normal yesterday.

Air pollution levels in Brunei-Muara and Temburong were considered "good" as PSI readings dropped to 47 and 39 respectively at press time. Meanwhile, "moderate" levels of pollution were recorded at monitoring stations in Tutong (70) and Belait (64).

A PSI reading below 50 is classified as "good", while a PSI reading of between 51 to 100 is considered "moderate".

Satellite imagery from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre in Singapore detected 117 hotspots yesterday scattered mostly in parts of central and western Borneo a marked decline from the 231 hotspots reported last Saturday.

Despite the improved air quality, the public have been urged to refrain from lighting fires outdoors to minimise pollution.

A Ministry of Health advisory said a moderate PSI reading may result in minor health effects such as coughing, eye irritation and a runny nose. Children, pregnant women, senior citizens and those with heart or lung disease are urged to refrain from excessive physical activity outdoors.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) said it is closely monitoring the situation and will keep the public informed about air quality in the Sultanate on its website at www.env.gov.bn or via Radio Televisyen Brunei.

The public can register a complaint about smoke or get more information about air quality on JASTRe's 144 hotline or by calling 2241262 (extension 405) during office hours.

PSI readings can also be accessed online on JASTRe website, while the latest weather updates are available on the Brunei Weather (Brunei WX) mobile application and on the Metrological Department's website at www.met.gov.bn.
