SINGAPORE - Two men have been separately charged in court for engaging in sex acts with a male without telling him first of their HIV-positive status, The Straits Times reported.

One is 48 years old and the other is 27. The victim is now aged 37.

The 48-year-old was diagnosed to be HIV-positive in 2006, but went on to engage in a sexual act with the victim in May 2009.

He failed to inform the victim of the risk of contracting HIV from him and getting the latter's voluntary agreement to accept the risk.

The defendant said he was afraid the victim would reject having sex with him if the victim knew he was HIV-infected.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and asked for leniency, saying that he regretted the mistake.

He will be sentenced on Dec 20.

The 27-year-old allegedly committed the same offence with the same victim in January 2009.

His hearing has been postponed to Dec 28.

If found guilty, they can be fined up to $50,000 and jailed for 10 years.
