50% rebate for residents of cleanest blocks

SINGAPORE - Residents in two blocks of flats will receive a 50 per cent rebate on their service and conservancy charges for next month, after winning the Cleanest Block Competition in Bishan-Toa Payoh.

This is the first time the rebates have been awarded in the group representation constituency, although similar competitions were held about five years ago.

They will be received by a total of 104 households from Block 404, Sin Ming Avenue, and Block 83, Lorong 2 Toa Payoh. This means savings of $45 for those living in executive flats in the Sin Ming Avenue block and $21 for those living in three-room flats in the Toa Payoh block.

Corporate bodies, owners of private property or non-citizens in the Toa Payoh block save $30.

Two town council cleaners assigned to these blocks will also receive a monetary award.

The competition, held every quarter, was organised to "encourage residents to be more involved in the cleanliness of their surroundings", said the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council in a press release yesterday. Its results are based on inspections of common areas of the HDB blocks, such as the void deck, lift lobbies and common corridors.

Mr Hri Kumar Nair, the town council's chairman and MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, said: "I congratulate the residents and cleaners of the two blocks for their achievement. I hope this will inspire all residents to do their bit so that we may all enjoy living in a clean and safe home."

Ms Johana Johari is one Toa Payoh resident who will benefit. The 40-year-old logistics officer said: "I think the rebates are helpful... They will motivate other blocks to be clean as well."
