Aware proposes 'holistic approach' to boost fertility

The Government should take a holistic approach to improving the fertility rate in Singapore, said the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) in a statement yesterday.

It suggested prioritising gender equality through legislating at least two weeks of paid paternity leave and converting four weeks of the 16-week maternity leave to parental leave to be taken by either spouse.

Aware also suggested the Government provide "universally accessible childcare support in various forms to all families"and to widen childcare subsidies, motherhood and housing benefits to include single mothers.
