Bone up on age-related issues and cancer at seminar

SINGAPORE - The number of people in Singapore who are diagnosed with colorectal cancer is increasing every year and is approaching that in developed countries such as the United States and Britain, said Dr Imran Nawaz, general surgeon at Parkway East Hospital.

The risk ratio for an average Singaporean to contract this cancer is about 1 in 50, he added.

Knowing one's risk of this cancer - as well as other cancers - could help in preventing it from happening.

Learn more from Dr Imran and five other doctors from Parkway East Hospital who will be speaking at the Mind Your Body Health Seminar 2013 next Saturday.

Mind Your Body is a weekly health magazine that is distributed free with The Straits Times every Thursday.

The half-day event, Combat Ill-health With Knowledge, will be split into two seminars that will run concurrently.

One is on breast, colorectal and gastric cancers, including prevention, detection and treatment.

The other is on age-related conditions such as degenerative joint conditions, amputations in diabetic patients and eye problems, and will also focus on how to prevent and treat them.

With at least one in three people above the age of 60 suffering from knee pain, many will end up with arthritis of the knee, said Dr Jeffrey Chew, orthopaedic surgeon, one of the speakers at the seminar. He will talk about advances in cartilage surgery which help restore knee function significantly and alleviate pain.

Mr Alan Ng, 35, a senior manager at a financial company, has signed up for the cancer seminar, as his mother had breast cancer and he is keen on knowing how to prevent cancer in general.

To attend one of the seminars, register before midnight tomorrow at: https://pbp.sph.com.sg/ mybhealth2013.

Or you may fax the following particulars to 6319-8219: name, NRIC, contact number, number of registrants for seminar 1 (cancer) or 2 (age-related conditions) and credit card number, expiry date and signature.

Online payment is by Visa or MasterCard credit cards only and is non-refundable.

The fee is $12 per person per seminar, including light refreshments. It will be held at the Conrad Centennial Singapore from 12.30pm to 5pm.
