BRUNEI - The Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Hj Jasmin Hj Jamudin represented the Sultanate at the 35th ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD) meeting which is currently being held in Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City, Philippines until this Friday.

According to a statement by NCB, Hj Jasmin, who is also the Head of the Delegation (HOD) of five other senior officials from NCB, highlighted the need to finalise the assessment for the ASOD Work Plan to realise ASEAN Drugs Free 2015.

"The task now is even greater as not only do we need to develop a better and more effective solutions, we must reassess the very nature and dimension of the drugs threat, as well as policies that can better serve the common purpose of dealing with this threat."

The ASOD meeting was hosted by the Dangerous Drug Board of Philippines and attended by senior officials from drug law enforcement agencies from all ASEAN member states.

These officials are responsible for overseeing the reduction of supply and demand of drugs and drug related issues.

NCB said some of the issues raised at the meeting included strengthening border control, air and seaport control and promoting joint operations, adopting the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's (UNODC) international Standards on Drug Use Prevention, and sharing of information on the emergence of New Psychoactive Substances.

The ASOD gathers once every year to discuss and monitor the implementation and coordination of drug policies and action plans to achieve a drug-free ASEAN next year.

The next ASOD meeting will be held in Singapore.
