Build bone strength in the pool

NEW YORK - Women who did a high-intensity aquatic workout for six months increased their strength and suffered fewer falls, according to a study that suggests bone- and muscle-building resistance training can be achieved with the right kinds of water exercises.

"(We tested) the exercise model for muscle training in gyms and put it inside swimming pools," said lead author Linda Moreira from the Universidade Federal de Sao Paulo.

The study should encourage post-menopausal women who are at risk of osteoporotic bone-thinning to engage in pool-based exercises as it can increase muscle and bone strength, said researchers.
