SINGAPORE - Singapore is at the midpoint of a full-blown dengue epidemic, Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan cautioned on Sunday.
There were 510 cases in the week ending April 20, the highest weekly number recorded since the major outbreak in 2005.
Since the start of this year, there have been 5,230 cases, more than the 4,632 cases for the whole of last year, Dr Balakrishnan warned that if nothing is done about the dengue problem, cases could go up to 1,000 per week.
"We have to guard against complacency, we have to guard against ignorance and we have to guard against indifference and to do that, the message has to be brought islandwide," he said at the launch of a national dengue campaign, Do the Mozzie Wipe Out.
