Free hearing screenings next weekend

SINGAPORE - Members of the public can get their hearing checked free-of-charge and receive educational tips on maintaining ear health next weekend at Nee Soon South Community Club.

Organised by Siemens Medical Instruments (SMI), the checks will be done by their volunteers on July 21 and 22. They will examine participants' ear canals for anomalies at their Video-Otoscopy booths.

Participate can also take part in interactive educational talks with a focus on hearing health, enjoy games and performances, and stand a chance to win lucky draw prizes such as the latest iPad, Osim neck and shoulder massagers and shopping vouchers.

The event, which will be from 1pm to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday, is part of Siemen's annual Hearing Awareness Week.

In its fourth installment this year, the event aims to raise awareness of hearing health amongst Singaporeans

Frequent exposure to excessively loud noises, such as those from motorised tools, automotive engines, and loud music can lead to hearing loss.

According to Siemens, about 40 per cent of Singaporeans diagnosed with hearing loss are younger than 40 years of age, and the figure has doubled in the past eight years.

This rate may be higher than reported as many are not aware of the extent of their hearing loss, underlining the importance of early education and prevention, said the company.
