SINGAPORE - More than 1,200 senior citizens will soon have access to regular health monitoring near their homes, allowing them to check their blood pressure or blood-glucose levels, for instance.
This will happen with the provision of self-help health stations at five NTUC Eldercare Senior Activity Centres by next month.
The stations, which will have staff to help the elderly, are located in Henderson, Telok Blangah, Lengkok Bahru, Taman Jurong and Redhill, said the chairman of NTUC Enterprise Co-operative, Mr Lim Boon Heng, yesterday.
He was speaking at the opening of NTUC Unity's 50th outlet at 100AM mall in Tanjong Pagar.
He added that pharmacists from NTUC Unity Healthcare - a health-care cooperative which operates pharmacies and dental clinics here - will visit the stations every three months to monitor senior citizens' blood-glucose levels, conduct medication reviews and provide counselling to seniors.
NTUC Unity Healthcare group chief executive Chua Song Khim said that these stations are to "empower the elderly to take charge of their health".
NTUC Unity Healthcare's pharmacist practice manager, Ms Tan Swee Chin, said that quarterly visits by pharmacists will allow the elderly to have their health conditions monitored and to be advised on medication.
At the event, five needy senior citizens from NTUC Eldercare Senior Activity Centres received a year's supply of health supplements.
