SINGAPORE - Seniors living in Tampines can look forward to a programme which aims to help them age healthily, be part of a close-knit community and live independently and confidently.

The programme, called Chloe - short for Community Healthy Living Outreach & Engagement - was piloted by the Tampines Ville Residents' Committee (RC) in Tampines Street 82.

It was launched yesterday by Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, who is the adviser to Tampines Grassroots Organisations.

House-to-house surveys will be carried out by volunteers over the next two months or so to better understand the health conditions of elderly residents, as well as their need for various health-related services. The RC will then assess these needs and make the necessary improvements to the precinct.

The RC's premises at Block 842, Tampines Street 82, will also be transformed into a Health Promoting Residents' Corner where monthly body-mass-index and blood-pressure checks, health talks and healthy-cooking demonstrations will be organised in collaboration with the Health Promotion Board.

The first to come under the programme, Tampines Ville RC has a total of 1,600 senior citizens living in 1,458 households - a higher number relative to those of the other Tampines RCs.

Mr Heng said that the programme will be rolled out to other zones in Tampines Central Constituency within the next 18 to 24 months, to reach out to 10,000 seniors in the estate.
