The Ministry of Health (MOH) said on friday that the risk of the novel coronavirus reported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday is low.
The statement said that as of Tuesday, the WHO had not received any reports of cases associated with the virus. The first case was a Saudi Arabian man, 60, who died in July.
Coronaviruses are a type of virus found in both animals and humans.
It can cause mild illnesses like the common cold in humans, but it is also known to have caused outbreaks of severe illness, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) in 2003, reported The Straits Times.
The MOH spokesman said the ministry is in contact with the WHO and overseas counterparts and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
