Musical actress reveals how she keeps fit while on tour

SINGAPORE - Keeping healthy is something that Ms Jennifer Fogarty does in all aspects of her life.

The 26-year-old not only runs five days a week to keep fit, but also takes care of her voice and acting skills by attending private classes in singing, speech therapy and acting when she is home in Boston. She stands 1.6m tall and weighs 48kg.

The American started performing professionally in 2009.

In 2011, she worked as the photo double for Mila Kunis in the movie Ted by Seth MacFarlane.

The actress, who is single, plays the role of Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family, a musical about a spooky family.

"It's a privilege to be able to bring this iconic character to life on stage. She's smart, strong and has positive morals," said Ms Fogarty.

The Broadway production is playing at Resorts World Sentosa till Sunday.

What do you do to keep fit?

It's important to stay in a routine while touring.

My go-to thing to do is running. I try to run at least five days a week to maintain a healthy lifestyle. My distance varies each week, but I stay between 8 and 12km during each run.

As we are in a touring company, we try to find running races to take part in wherever we are performing. We have done only a couple of 5km races so far, both for fun and for a challenge.

As long as we have the time and extra energy, the races are a great way to make our exercise routines more exciting.

What is your secret to looking so fabulous?

I put it down to making healthy choices and staying active. These are extremely important in order for a person to maintain a fabulous feeling.

As long as I feel healthy, I am a confident woman.

Personally, looking fabulous means to be strong and confident and to wear a genuine smile.

Has there ever been a time when you were not fit and fab?

There have been plenty of times when I haven't felt my best, mostly in college when I had different priorities.

Taking better care of myself was something I learnt as I grew up and became more serious about my career.

What is your diet like?

I am not going to lie. I love food that isn't exactly great for me, which is why I try to stay on an exercise plan.

If I could eat a cheeseburger for every meal, I would.

However, I am not a picky eater, so it is easy to turn that cheeseburger into a salad instead.

I usually eat three meals a day and sometimes substitute a meal with a protein shake.

What are your indulgences?

Any dessert.

The two favourite things that I can't say no to are my mother's chocolate cream pie and the chocolate-covered almonds from Starbucks.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

I try to have a calm and happy environment, no matter where I am.

When I am at work, I plug in some of my favourite music and use a personal steam inhaler to relax and focus.

When I'm back at the hotel, I put on a meditation radio programme, light a candle, talk to my roommate and do things that are stress free as much as I can.

Surrounding myself with people and a job I love helps me to keep a relaxed lifestyle.

I also keep myself open to opportunities that come along.

What are the three most important things in your life?

A good attitude, strong relationships and my family.

These are the three things that I find most important and the things I am most thankful for.

At the end of the day, my friends, family and a positive outlook on life define me as a person.

Would you go for plastic surgery and why?

Everyone is different and needs to do certain things to feel good about themselves.

I would never judge anyone for it.

Although, I do promote loving yourself for who you are. I just want to add that being different is also sexy.

Do you think you're sexy?

I think I am confident in being who I am. I suppose that could translate to being sexy.

Having confidence is an attractive trait.
