New way to fend off chikungunya virus

New way to fend off chikungunya virus
Lab executive Chen Huixin, 25, Assistant Professor Justin Chu and postgraduate student Shirley Lam, 23, from the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine examining an X-ray of the chikungunya virus.

Researchers here have discovered a new "gene silencing" method that could offer protection from the chikungunya virus - that caused a health scare in 2008 - for up to 15 days.

The team from the National University of Singapore's Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine used this approach to inhibit the virus from spreading.

This could pave the way for the development of an anti-viral treatment.
