SINGAPORE - The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) NSman who had a cardiac arrest during physical training last week is still in the intensive care unit in hospital, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said.

Dr Ng, who added that any new updates will be sent out, was speaking on Sunday to reporters on the sidelines of a community event in Toa Payoh.

Lance Corporal (NS) Chew Koh Leong, 32, was undergoing IPPT preparatory training at Maju camp when the incident took place on Thursday evening.

The IPPT is a mandatory annual fitness test.

He was successfully resuscitated by an SAF medical doctor and medic and sent to the National University Hospital.

In a statement last week, the SAF said that he was being treated in the intensive care unit and that specialists are investigating the cause of his cardiac arrest.

The statement added that he had no known prior history of heart disease.

The community event - a vertical challenge at 40-storey Housing Board blocks in Toa Payoh - yesterday drew 196 participants aged from seven to the mid-60s.

Otherwise known as the Ultimate Challenge, it saw about a third of the participants racing up a total of 200 storeys, or 3,195 steps.

The event raised $154,000 for the Toa Payoh Central Youth Enrichment Fund, which pays for enrichment courses for those aged five to 18.

Said Dr Ng: "Toa Payoh Central has a number of rental and lower social-economic families, so we wanted to help their children level up."
