Radiographer who insulted patients online: 'I was not being unprofessional'

SINGAPORE - "Nasty" remarks posted by a radiographer on Facebook about his patient have attracted plenty of attention online.

But radiographer Lee Bin Hao, who is employed by MW Medical Centre at Marina Bay Sands, insisted they were just "innocent rants about a bad day at work". The 25-year-old has since removed the posts.

In one of the two postings which were sent to citizen journalism site Stomp, he describes a patient as a "schizophrenic urine smelling auntie with urine on your both legs".

The other was directed at "the one who didn't flush away her period blood on tissue in my clinic's only toilet".

The postings, which were uploaded onto Stomp, had been viewed more than 5,000 times as of last night.

When The Straits Times contacted the radiographer by phone, however, he said he was not being unprofessional.

"I didn't put in my company's name, or any information that will identify the patient... It was just an innocent posting and I didn't know it would spread online," he said.

He said while he had been taught to have compassion for patients, society often "misunderstands people who work in the health-care industry".

"People may say, 'you're not caring enough, you're paid to do this, it is your job to suck it up...' But let's face it. A job is still a job, and there will be complaints and bad days," he added.

He then clarified that he was not referring to a patient in his posting about the staff toilet.

The user who had sent the postings said on Stomp that the radiographer is also expected "to be like a doctor".

"I don't see why are you complaining about your own patient because everyone will fall sick or have medical problems.

"So you, as a doctor, should help out and not make nasty comments on Facebook for the public to read."

When contacted, Mr Terence Teo, business development manager for MW Medical, said he was not aware of the incident, but would conduct a thorough investigation of the case, as the clinic views its staff's professional conduct seriously.
