SINGAPORE - Rice imported from Thailand is regularly inspected and sampled to ensure that it complies with food safety standards and requirements, said the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) on Friday.

Singapore imports rice from various countries such as India, Thailand and Vietnam.

An AVA spokesperson said that AVA's sampling tests cover a wide range of food-borne hazards including chemical contaminants like pesticide residues and heavy metals. To date, rice imported from Thailand have met AVA's requirements and food safety standards.

AVA assured consumers that the rice sold here is safe for consumption. The authority added that food products that do not comply with Singapore's safety standards and requirements are not allowed for sale in Singapore.

AVA said that it will continue to monitor imported rice from Thailand to ensure consumer safety.
