Role models honoured at healthcare awards

SINGAPORE - Courage, selflessness, compassion, humanity, steadfastness in ethics and extraordinary dedication - these are the hallmarks of the winners of the Healthcare Humanity Award (HHA).

61 healthcare professionals were recognised in the annual award, held yesterday afternoon in Biopolis. President Tony Tan Keng Yam presented the awards to the winners who hail from both the public and private health sectors.

HHA is a continuation of the Courage Awards, which were given out in 2003 to honour the healthcare workers who battled the deadly SARS epidemic with exceptional selflessness and dedication. HHA was launched in 2004 to continue this legacy of recognising inspirational healthcare workers who epitomise values that highlight the nobility of their profession.

A total of 115 healthcare workers were nominated from 18 hospitals and healthcare institutions. A panel of five judges, led by the chairman of the Singapore Red Cross Society Mr Tee Tua Ba, evaluated the nominees and selected the 61 winners.

The National Healthcare Group (NHG), which had 18 winners in total, also had the largest cohort of geriatric specialists who were honoured in HHA. They comprised five doctors and nurses from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and National Skin Centre (NSC). One of the winners, Dr Joshua Kua from IMH (pictured above with President Tan), told YourHealth that the satisfaction he gets when he sees patients improving with his help is "priceless".

Besides doctors and nurses, other HHA winners include therapists, social workers, a paramedic and even a driver.

Each winner takes home a silver medallion and $1,500.
