Secondary school students mobilised in dengue outreach effort

SINGAPORE - More than 360 secondary one students from Compassvale Secondary School will be doing their part to combat the spread of dengue in an outreach event to take place this Wednesday.

On May 29, students will undergo 1.5 hours of training on dengue prevention methods and anti-littering measures, and embark on door-to-door visits to distribute handbooks on dengue prevention to residents in the area.

They will remind residents to perform regular "Mozzie Wipeouts" within their homes and also collect recyclable items from these units.

A total of 50 blocks, comprising of some 5,000 households, within the Punggol Central neighbourhood will be covered.

The students will also be forming a Junior Environment Watch Group (JEWG) to work with grassroot organisations with the aim of spreading public health and environmental awareness within the community.

JEWG is a joint initiative by the North East Community Development Council (CDC) and the National Environment Agency (NEA). The programme aims to engage students and youths from the upper primary, secondary and tertiary levels in promoting and cultivating a green community, so as to achieve a sustainable future.

The Compassvale Secondary School JEWG will be the largest group to date, NEA said.
