SINGAPORE - The hazy conditions Singapore experienced yesterday improved around noon today, but the haze could be making a return tomorrow, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in its daily update.

At 7pm today, the 24-hr Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) stood at between 77 to 93.

NEA said that the total number of hotspots detected in Sumatra and Kalimantan today was 48 and 171 respectively. The low hotspot count for Sumatra was due to cloud cover. Smoke haze was visible in eastern Kalimantan and southern Sumatra.

For tomorrow, the prevailing winds are forecast to be light and variable in direction. Thundery showers are expected for Singapore in the late morning and early afternoon.

There may be occasional slight haze during the day, NEA warned. The 24-hr PSI for Singapore is expected to be in the high-end of the 'moderate' range and low-end of the 'unhealthy' range. A reading of 101 and above puts air quality here in the 'unhealthy' range while 'moderate' means a PSI of 51 to 100.

NEA said that the health impact of the haze is dependent on one's health status, the PSI level and the length and intensity of outdoor activity.

"Reducing outdoor activities and physical exertion can help limit the ill effects from haze exposure. Given the air quality forecast for the next 24 hours, healthy persons should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion," NEA said.

"The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while those with chronic lung or heart disease should avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion. Persons who are not feeling well, especially the elderly and children, and those with chronic heart or lung conditions, should seek medical attention," the agency added.
