Singapore polyclinics see more patients with haze-related problems

SINGAPORE - Polyclinics here have seen more patients for haze-related conditions like respiratory problems and conjunctivitis.

Attendance records for patients seeking treatment at polyclinics from June 17 to 23 were up 16.5 per cent over the June 10-16 week.

Emergency departments at restructured hospitals saw only a slight uptick of 0.9 per cent during the same period.

The 24-hour PSI level today is expected to remain in the moderate band of 51-100. But based on the trend of elevated PM2.5 readings, the health advisory provided will be based on the unhealthy band.

■ Healthy people should minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion.

■ The elderly, pregnant women and children should minimise staying outdoors over a long period.

People with chronic lung disease, heart disease or stroke should avoid all outdoor activity. If outdoor activity is unavoidable, wear an N95 mask.

Dr Lyn James, director of epidemiology and disease control at the Ministry of Health, reminded people that the masks cannot be shared, but they can be used several times and changed when they are soiled.
