SMRT receives $3.1m grant to operate new wheelchair accessible taxis

Taxi operator SMRT will be awarded a $3.1 million grant to operate 30 taxis that can accommodate larger wheelchairs used by elderly and the disabled.

The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) made this announcement on Thursday, and said the funding will help defray the costs of purchasing and operating the 30 wheelchair accessible taxis.

The first batch of 15 such taxis is expected to be ready by March next year, before the existing London Cabs are phased out.

The full fleet of 30 cabs will hit the roads by August next year.

MCYS had invited taxi operators to apply for the Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Grant in May, and three operators submitted proposals.
