SINGAPORE - The Health Promotion Board has commissioned a survey to better understand young people's attitudes and behaviour towards sex, with the aim of promoting healthy sexual practices among them.

It will interview at least 200 citizens and permanent residents aged between 13 to 25 years of age on topics such as how they experiment with sex, why they do or do not practise abstinence and what steps they take to protect themselves.

The study will also conduct focus groups roping in students from lower and upper secondary, polytechnics, junior colleges, pre-university schools and the Institute of Technical Education.

The opinions of both gays and heterosexuals will be sought.

The information gathered from this study will be used to formulate its new Youth AIDS campaign.

The Straits Times reported that the number of young people testing positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has gone up recently. Almost 100 people aged 29 and younger tested positive for HIV last year, compared to about 50 in 2005.
