More health-care facilities in Kent Ridge and Outram are expected soon.
The National University Hospital (NUH) Medical Centre and a new National Heart Centre at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) are slated to be completed by the second half of next year.
On the sidelines of a health-care conference yesterday, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said the facilities will open in phases.
Situated above Kent Ridge MRT station, the NUH Medical Centre will house eight specialist outpatient clinics relocated from NUH's main building and Kent Ridge Wing, as well as from the National University Cancer Institute. The freed-up space in the main building will be used for the expansion of the National University Heart Centre.
The new National Heart Centre will be set up opposite SGH's Block 4, replacing the 18-year-old centre in Mistri Wing on SGH's Outram campus. It has won an award for its eco-friendly design.
Mr Gan said that in a land- scarce country like Singapore, the challenge is to build buildings that meet today's needs without excessive wastage, while being able to cater for future increase in demand.
