Veteran actor Huang Wenyong dies of cancer

SINGAPORE - Veteran actor Huang Wenyong died on Saturday in the hospital, said his family.

He was 60.

Huang, who joined the then Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in the 1980s, was best known for his role as Chinese migrant Ah Shui in the Channel 8 period drama "The Awakening".

This year, he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor in the Star Awards for his role in The Joys Of Life .

Apart from appearing in dramas, he also released two albums and sang the theme and interlude songs for Return of the Prince and Neighbours , where he had also played the lead characters.

In November last year, the actor raised concerns when he appeared 'thin and haggard' on television. He clarified then that he did not have major health problems. He said then that he had suffered from stomach flu and could not recover completely due to hectic work schedules and irregular meal times.

Meanwhile, in late March this year, fans were enraged when online posts announced that he had died of cancer. His manager refuted the news.
