WATCH: 5 germ traps hiding in your kitchen

What is the first thing you do when you are down with food poisoning?

Head down to AVA to file a complaint about the auntie at your local kopitiam because she served your wonton mee without wearing a hair net?

Don't be so quick to point the finger as the fault may come from your very own kitchen.

Here are five germ traps in your kitchen that you might not be aware of according, as listed by Time:

1. The refrigerator

When defrosting meat, the melting juices might drip to other food ingredients below.

One way to fix this would be to store meat at the bottom-most shelf of the refrigerator in order to prevent it from contaminating other foods.

2. Sponges and cloths

The things you use to clean the kitchen can easily become the dirtiest things in the kitchen.

It would be good practice to put them in a bowl of water and microwave it for one minute daily to get rid of all the germs.

3. The sink

Bacteria flourish in stagnant water and a sink is no stranger to those.

Remember to drain the water after every wash and be sure to wash and sanitise often.

4. The counter

Many people tend to cut and chop their ingredients on the kitchen counter.

Instead, use a clean chopping board and replace often.

5. Pets and pests

Roaches and rats carry deadly germs to your kitchen.

Your pet dog Sparky might be guilty of this as well.
