Recurrent early morning awakenings can be due to psychological conditions like depression, or physical problems like sleep apnoea.

Q. I often wake up in the middle of the night (around 3-4am) and then find it difficult to fall asleep again until about 5:30am. I need to wake up by 6:30am to get ready for work.

What can I do to make sure I sleep through the whole night, or that I get adequate rest?

A. Recurrent early morning awakenings can be due to psychological conditions like depression, or physical problems like sleep apnoea.

If one has difficulty maintaining sleep through the night, a medical evaluation is recommended to rule out treatable sleep disorders.

The treatment of recurrent early morning awakenings is dependent on the cause, which can be diagnosed by a physician.

Sometimes, a sleep study may be needed.

The above information was provided by Dr Lim Li Ling, President of Singapore Sleep Society and Medical Director of the Singapore Neurology & Sleep Centre.
