Heavy traffic on Bukit Timah Road: LTA replies

The article "Drive to city 'worst from Bukit Timah'" (Oct 12) notes that traffic along the Bukit Timah corridor is heavy due to construction works in the area. While this is true of major construction that requires traffic diversions to facilitate safe construction, these are temporary in nature.

The very construction activities that currently contribute to heavier traffic conditions will ultimately yield lasting benefits for residents living along this corridor.

When completed in 2016, the Downtown Line 2, for example, will provide faster access from Bukit Timah to the city centre. Motorists can also look forward to improved traffic conditions when Bukit Timah Road is eventually straightened by the end of next year.

Besides the construction of Downtown Line 2, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will also widen Clementi Road between Bukit Timah Road and the Ayer Rajah Expressway from dual-three lanes to dual-four lanes in both directions.

We are also constructing two new flyovers and widening parts of Upper Bukit Timah and Woodlands roads.

During construction, we take special care to minimise the impact of road diversions - for example, whenever possible, we ensure lane-for-lane replacement to maintain existing road capacity. Temporary road diversions are also carried out in stages, where possible.

We apologise to motorists and residents affected by our construction. We hope they will understand the constraints we face, and extend their fullest support to the engineering team who are doing their best to complete these projects on schedule to serve the public better.
