Honour our legends

Honour our legends

THEY moved a nation in their Malaysia Cup heyday and were among the nation's finest footballers.

Thousands were awestruck by their mastery and wizardry as they ruled the lush green of the National Stadium.

The teams from the 60s to mid-80s, with members who were Malay, Chinese, Indian and Eurasian, wore the national flag on their jerseys with pride and truly represented the Singaporean spirit.

How about doing something to honour our past football legends as part of SG50 celebrations?

Perhaps the Football Association of Singapore could organise a gala dinner to recognise the achievements of these legendary footballers. They could also be given commemorative plaques.

Special arrangements could be made for their families and fans to attend this event as well.

It is sad that, as the years roll on, our memories of these grand entertainers of Singapore's most popular spectator sport also diminish.

As we celebrate Singapore's 50th anniversary this year, it is timely to thank our football legends for their sacrifices, achievements and immense contributions to the sport here.

Our sporting heroes certainly deserve to have their praises sung while they still live.
