Iran starts trial of Afghans accused of raping French tourist

A trial opened in Iran on Sunday of four Afghans accused of raping a French tourist in mountains on Tehran's northwestern outskirts, said IRIB state television.

The unnamed woman, 24, was hiking in the Farahzad district just outside the capital on September 19 last year when the four allegedly attacked her, said Mehr news agency.

She was rescued by a fifth Afghan, said IRIB, quoting her statement to police.

One of the alleged assailants was captured hiding in the mountains and the three others were caught trying to flee back to Afghanistan.

The trial of the four reportedly illegal migrants is being held behind closed doors.
