TOKYO - Japan's trade deficit expanded 25.0 percent on year to US$9.8 billion (S$12.4 billion) in August as the country's energy import bill rose on a weak yen and high demand, official data showed Thursday.
The deficit of 960.3 billion yen (S$12.3 billion) was up from 768.4 billion yen a year earlier but was smaller than market expectations for a shortfall of about 1.06 trillion yen.
