Kim tops figure skating short program

Defending Olympic champion South Korean Yuna Kim took the lead after the short program in women's figure skating at the Sochi Olympics on Wednesday, while Mao Asada, the 2010 Vancouver Games silver medalist, fell to 16th due to some unsuccessful jumps.

The South Korean scored 74.92 points, just 0.8 points ahead of second-placed Adelina Sotnikova of Russia and Carolina Kostner of Italy, who finished third.

The 23-year-old Asada earned just 55.51 points, while Akiko Suzuki and Kanako Murakami placed eighth and 15th with 60.97 and 55.60 points, respectively.

Russian teen Julia Lipnitskaia, who had emerged as a gold-medal candidate after turning in a dazzling performance in the team event that helped lead the host country to the gold medal, placed fifth.
