House Tour: An inviting loft-style apartment with customised furniture

Space may be an issue in many apartments, but Kelvin Teo loves a good challenge. This 680 sq ft duplex one-bedroom condo is a fine example of how the principal designer of Space Sense Studio can create a very modern, aesthetically beautiful and liveable place, despite constraints.

Kelvin built a loft to accommodate more practical spaces, and also made sure the different sections of the home serve multiple functions. The stretch of cabinetry on the first floor starts with a shoe cabinet at the entrance foyer, extending to the kitchen counter, then all the way to floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. A 55inch TV was mounted between the cabinets to avoid having to create a separate console.

A dining area with booth seating for six comes with storage beneath. The dining table was customised, with the table support built in the centre, as opposed to the conventional four-legged design, which takes up space. The balcony also hides another vertical storage space, with artificial plants camouflaging it.

With extra space created by the extended loft, a second bookcase, identical to the one on the first floor, was designed to house more of the owner's massive book collection. The loft functions as a study and lounging area, which comfortably fits a two-seater, with a moveable side table plus a study table for two.

The bedroom comes with a 4m wardrobe to accommodate clothes and more storage space. The bed is elevated for a "floating" effect and to make the room feel more spacious. An artistic marble textured wall feature with copper inlay forms the backdrop to the bed, creating an ultra-luxe feel.

Details speak volumes in this apartment. Kelvin carefully chose the materials, from the stone-like tiles for the double volume wall to the wood-textured laminate for the carpentry (and leather laminate for the wardrobe), and black marble for the kitchen top, backsplash and dining table.
