Limited TV coverage of SEA Games

SINGAPORE - I am disappointed that MediaCorp's coverage of the SEA Games includes only the opening and closing ceremonies, football matches and a two-hour daily "action belt". Apart from this, there is a 30-minute daily highlights show.

This is insufficient, given that we are a nation hoping to become a regional sporting powerhouse and which will host the next Games.

Instead of generating excitement among Singaporeans in the lead-up to the 2015 Games in Singapore, the national broadcaster has chosen to offer paltry coverage of the ongoing Games.

It is understandable that MediaCorp needs to consider its commercial interests, and it has already dedicated its prime-time belt for the next couple of weeks to the Games.

However, apart from these evening telecasts, there is no other coverage even though MediaCorp now has the ability to present the Games on alternative platforms such as its Toggle website. For instance, it could set up two temporary channels on Toggle to broadcast the Games round the clock.

I am also puzzled that MediaCorp is not showing the Games on channels other than Channel 5, unlike what it did during the Olympic Games last year

It is also a shame that both StarHub and SingTel's mioTV are not broadcasting the Games. They have missed an ideal opportunity to show their support for our athletes.

In contrast, Malaysian cable network Astro has dedicated a channel, Astro Arena, to broadcast the Games. I hope our broadcasters will work together to offer Singaporeans more extensive coverage of the SEA Games.
