Local celebs join in churros craze

Since their soft launch in May, there is usually a queue of at least 20 when Chulop! opens at 2.30pm. In about five hours, the churros would have all been snapped up by more than a hundred peckish customers.

Opened by local celeb couple Syarif Sleeq and Malaque Mahdaly, the churros shop at East Village, a new mall in Bedok, has enjoyed brisk business.

The churros are made with actress-host Malaque's own recipe and are paired with four signature dips - Spanish caramel, milk chocolate, white chocolate and Syarif's personal favourite, Mexican chocolate.

Three churos and a dip costs $3.90.

Chulop! was born out of the couple's love for the popular Spanish dough dessert.

"Malaque and I have loved churros since our dating days and we enjoy dining at places that serve them. Given her love for baking, she decided to try making her own and it was really good. Not being biased!" Syarif told M with a laugh.

Focus on business

Malaque and Syarif, both 26, had initially shelved plans for the business to focus on their wedding last year.

"Technically, this is our first baby!" joked Syarif, who will host the new season of travel programme Zoom New Zealand on Suria in September.

Malaque recently starred in cooking series E.A.T (TIF) on Suria.

Every morning for two hours, they prepare 20kg of dough for the churros before handing over the kiosk to their employees.

Malaque fries the churros and tends to customers throughout the day.

On how Chulop! sets itself apart from its competitors, Syarif said: "Everything that we sell is homemade. We also innovate. For example, we have premium dip flavours like Kinder Bueno from time to time. We will also have pandan churros with gula melaka dip."

Customers can expect to enjoy something new in August when Chulop! officially launches red velvet churros with cream cheese dip.

The red and white colours pay homage to Singapore's Jubilee birthday this year.
