'Made in Malaysia' label popular in China

PETALING JAYA - Malaysian products, especially foodstuff, have a huge market in China after a series of tainted and fake food scandals there, says Malaysia China International Trade Link Association (Macita) vice-president Tan Eng Wah.

Noting that many Chinese have lost confidence in locally-made products after some of them failed safety requirements, he said consumers tend to buy imported goods.

And those with the "Made in Malaysia" label are popular, he added.

"Malaysians used to bring back China products to sell here, but today, the trend has changed. We are bringing our products to be sold there," said Tan, who is in the healthcare business in China.

Tan is among the guests, including government officials, who will be sharing their experience in doing business in China at the Malaysia China Silk Road Economic Forum 2016.

The three-day event, conducted by Macita, will be held at Sunway Resort Hotel from Sept 3.

Some 1,000 local entrepreneurs are expected to attend the forum, which will be followed by a gala dinner and awards presentation ceremony to recognise the achievements of outstanding entrepreneurs in Malaysia.

Organising chairman Puan Sri Susan Cheah said some 90 China-national entrepreneurs, representing various trade associations, have confirmed their attendance.

A business matching session will be arranged for entities from both countries, she added.

The event is aimed at improving international trade and economic collaboration between Malaysia and China while promoting bilateral ties and networking among entrepreneurs from both countries.

The Chinese entourage will head south to explore investment opportunities at Iskandar Malaysia before leaving for Sri Lanka on another business trip.
