PUTRAJAYA: Two Cabinet ministers have been assigned to coordinate rescue and relief work in Sarawak in the event of floods in the coming days or weeks.
Agriculture and Agro-based Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim have been told to ensure the preparations were all in place.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the National Disaster Management Agency had also been asked to make extra preparations.
"We are not leaving anything to chance. We are sending the necessary help; the equipment and the manpower to Sarawak.
"We also have authorities on standby in other flood-prone states," he told the media after receiving Zambian vice-president Inonge Mutukwa Wina at his office yesterday.
Ahmad Shabery is tasked with the job in view of his experience in dealing with floods in his Kemaman constituency in Terengganu.
Shahidan is put in charge of overseeing national disaster management.
On the meeting with Wina, Dr Ahmad Zahid said Zambia was keen to learn from Malaysia's agriculture sector as the country aimed to reduce its dependency on minerals.
"We are happy to share our expertise and I suggested to Wina for Zambian officials to meet up with the experts at the Malaysian Palm Oil Board to hear out their success story," he said.
