3 dead as boat carrying illegal immigrants sinks off Johor

JOHOR BARU, Malaysia - Three people drowned when a boat sunk off the waters of Sungai Tengah in Bandar Penawar near here early Tuesday morning.

Police have confirmed that the dead included two adult women and a man, all Indonesian nationals.

The three, along with the boat's other passengers, are believed to have been in the midst of travelling illegally to Batam, Indonesia when the vessel sunk at around 2.56am.

Authorities also confirmed that 26 other passengers rescued from the mishap have been detained to assist in investigations.
