4 armed men escape with 10 trays of jewellery in shop heist

MALAYSIA - The heist took just a minute.

Four armed men entered a gold shop in Plaza Sentral, Petaling Jaya, on Friday and smashed the glass counters, scooped up jewellery and escaped on motorcycles.

The Star reported that the jewellery stolen was worth RM600,000 (S$230,000), while China Press reported that it was worth over RM700,000.

Brickfields Deputy Superintendent of Police Aida Abdul Hamid said the four men, who were armed with a pistol and large hammers, burst into the shop at around 1.20pm and fired one warning shot to frighten the staff and customers into fleeing the shop.

She said: "As the people fled, one suspect fired the gun again to break the security glass while his accomplices smashed the shop with hammers."

Supt Aida said the men carted away 10 trays of jewellery and escaped through the backdoor of the shopping mall.

She said the crime happened so quickly that the mall's security guard was not aware of the robbery.

The police have obtained CCTV footage of the heist and are investigating.
