$40 million for new Kuching museum

KUCHING -The Sarawak government has allocated RM100 million for a new museum to commemorate the legacy of its state capital here.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the new museum would be near the Tun Razak Hall of the Sarawak Museum.

It would face Padang Merdeka to emphasise the development of the city from one era to another.

"The museum will be an introduction to visitors and will display the development that had taken place," he said at the 25th Kuching City Day celebrations at Stadium Perpaduan yesterday.

In line with the city's development, a new mega project is in the pipeline known as Legacy Square of Kuching.

It will consist of historical sites, old shops and green scenery coupled with new buildings.

"We want to have a balanced city where the old and new blend into the modern façade." The project will involve several phases.

Some of the new buildings can already be seen, such as the Merdeka Plaza.
