Anwar walks out of hospital a free man

KUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is now a free man.

He walked out of Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital at 11.30am Tuesday (May 16) a free man and is now en route to Istana Negara to meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.

Anwar was initially scheduled to be released on June 10, 2018, after his five-year sentence that started on Feb 10, 2015 was reduced for good behaviour.

    In his first press conference since his release at his residence in Segambut on Wednesday (May 16), Anwar said that he was only back as a citizen.

    "I'll be taking time off to give a series of talks in Harvard, Georgetown and a few Muslim countries," said Anwar.

    "I've given my assurance to Mahathir and Azizah that I'm here as a concerned citizen, with complete support for them manage the affairs of the country," he said.

    Anwar also said that as premier, Dr Mahathir had the prerogative to form the Cabinet, but added that the Prime Minister had given him assurance that he would consult party leaders before deciding on its composition.

Anwar was supposed to speak to the press outside the centre upon his release, but the sheer hubbub from supporters and media seems to have delayed this.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said earlier that Anwar is scheduled to hold a press conference at his home in Segambut at around 4pm.

"Anwar will perform terawih prayers at his home before attending the rally at Padang Timur tonight," he told reporters.
