KUALA LUMPUR: A welder dreamt big and wanted to be the boss, so much so that he modified his car registration plate to read "WA BOSS" (I am the Boss).

The 23-year-old was arrested at an Ops Roda Khas police roadblock here on Friday night when his Honda Jazz was stopped.

City traffic chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain said the car's plate did not meet stipulated specifications.

He said the registration number was modified to read as WA BOSS T from afar.

"The actual registration number of the car is WA 8055 T. Modifying the letters is a serious offence. We do not want this to be a trend, as it can be linked to criminal activity with the use of false registration plates," he said.

ACP Mohd Nadzri said 399 summonses were issued to motorists during the three-hour operation which began at 10pm.

The operation, which targeted motorcyclists, was conducted simultaneously in Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Bangsar.

He said there was a 7.3 per cent increase in road accidents within Kuala Lumpur in 2016, but fatalities had decreased.

"There were 218 fatal accidents, compared to 246 in 2015. We are grateful that stricter enforcement led to a lower rate,'' he added.
